We went back to Stonetown for one night before we took a flight in the morning from Zanzibar to Arusha, where our safari started. From the air, we got to see all the stunning bright white and blue sand bars in the Indian Ocean and the gorgeous green main land of Tanzania with all its mountains (including Mount Kilimanjaro) and vast plains.
Our safari started at Lake Manyara, where we saw lions asleep in the acacia trees and millions of flamingos on the horizon sitting in the Lake, along with tons of zebra, monkeys, elephants and giraffes. We had a fun and very knowledgeable safari guide, who answered JB and my many questions. If you have any questions about how the animals live, etc. feel free to ask!
After beautiful Lake Manyara, we headed to the vast plains of the Serengeti, where we saw the great migration of the wildebeest (there were thousands upon thousands of wildebeest all moving together – this was one of my favorite things I saw the whole trip), leopards asleep in the trees, cheetahs, lions on the prowl of a herd of zebra, hyenas eating a baby hippo and tons of other stuff incredible things. We also got to eat lunch at the spot where Rafiki holds Simba up after he’s born in the Lion King and they sing “Circle of Life” – I thought that was pretty cool:)
Each night of the Safari we camped in the middle of the parks, which was beautiful and exciting, but also a little scary to hear the hyena and lions so close. It was especially frightening if you had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night!
We finished the safari with a day in the Ngorongoro Crater, which was once a volcano, but is now a very green fertile Crater serving as a home to tons of animals. In Ngorongoro, we saw black rhinos (which are very rare and on the endangered species list), ostriches, lots of baby animals and some animals making babies. The pictures from Ngorongoro are incredible. They will be up as soon as I can, but I’m not sure when that will be!
Then we were back in Arusha for a night and the next day we took a long bus ride back to Dar Es Salaam before we headed our separate ways. The pictures will do a better job of showing you how incredible the trip was; but, I wanted to try to paint a bit of the picture in words…
